Considering buying some stock in Snapchat? Make sure you get the right company. Much to their chagrin (we’re sure), it seems that a group of not so savvy investors mistakenly bought up stock in a mobile dating app start-up called SNAP Interactive Inc. (we’re thinking this is a case of mistaken identity, no?). In fact, this kind of mix-up is not uncommon. Tweeter Inc. (a home entertainment company) experienced a similar surge in investments suspiciously close to the date of Twitter filing for its IPO. Let this be a lesson to all of us to always read the fine print, or at least check the spelling of companies before buying stock.
It seems that Punxsutawney Phil got it right this year when he saw his shadow. More winter is coming. After what seems like an unseasonably warm February, Mother Nature has swung right back with “thundersnow” and blizzards for the upper east coast. You may be thinking: but what in the world is thundersnow? Well, essentially, this phenomenon is exactly what it sounds like: a heavy summer rain, just the winter version. Technically, it has to do with layers of rising air and special turret cloud protrusions, but we’ll settle for understanding that it’s a fairly uncommon and exciting winter storm phenomenon - and it sounds really cool. Thunder, thunder, thunder snow, ho!
Set your alarms for an early Saturday morning, the snow moon is upon us, and with it comes one of the greatest sky shows in years. Tonight is a double-whammy of astronomical wonder. Kicking off the festivities will be a lunar eclipse that starts around 7:45pm EST. Merely a warmup, the real show kicks into high gear at 3am on Saturday when a comet (45P) will become visible in the night scale. Star gazers will be able to view the comet, and it’s magnificent tale, in greater clarity than usual due to the penumbral lunar eclipse.
This week in unusual large scale theft: someone made off with $100,000 worth of blueberries. The burglary occurred in Canada, while a large refrigeration truck was carrying the goods in question from Hamilton, Ontario towards Toronto. The Hamilton police are on the case, searching high and low for this sneakiest of berry bandits. Many loyal citizens and lovers of fruit have come forth with suggestions. Have they checked Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory? Perhaps keeping an eye out for anyone with suspiciously blue lips or hands? And while we may joke, this may be the biggest fruit heist Canada has ever seen.
Lady Gaga gave the athletes a run for their money on Sunday in her energetic Super Bowl halftime performance, complete with diving from the sky and all (although we’ve heard this impressive stunt was indeed prerecorded). The performance does seem to have launched Gaga further into the limelight, on top of the success of her latest release “Joanne”. She has responded to the reignition of her fanbase and announced a world tour of the album. But in addition to the positive responses, Lady Gaga also had to fight back against body-shaming as she shared a photo from her performance, reminder her fans to be happy with and proud of themselves.
And what a game it was! The Patriots’ amazing comeback will go down in the annals of football history. After a year of declining ratings a game like this may be what the NFL needs to pump some fresh excitement into the support. Although there are some that point to this comeback as more proof of the great NFL conspiracy! On social media, the game saw an increase in conversation compared to 2016. Top commercials included Buick, T-Mobile, and Avocados from Mexico (our personal favorite).
It seems like Beyonce’s not the only one with some big news to announce; are twins the new Hollywood trend? George Clooney and wife Amal are expecting two new members of their family it seems. Fans of the couple are very excited by this news (although we’re sure they didn’t get anywhere close to Beyonce’s number of insta likes, sorry Clooneys) and now the public could very well expect such announcements from all their favorite celebrities, or at least some other exciting and distracting news. Although, we have to wonder if this couldn’t come at a worst time when you consider his BFF Brad Pitt is back on the market.
Your adorable baby animal fix for the week is right here. Fiona, born prematurely at the Cincinnati Zoo, has taken her first wobbly steps! Only weighing half of what a healthy hippo baby should weigh at birth, caretakers warned that she may not be strong enough to make it, however Fiona’s side-to-side gait has proven them wrong!
In closing, everyone keep an eye out for this adorable yet mysterious owl named Oscar. After a glowing performance in the bird show at an Australian zoo, Oscar got spooked and flew right up into a tree and then was gone from sight. Owls aren’t usually the cuddly, cozy types, but the public has found a soft spot for this lost little Oscar.
