Social Media Best Practices for Summer

Ah, summer time, when the livin’ is easy *sips ice cold lemonade through an umbrella straw*…but social media doesn’t vacation. But no need to break into a sweat, we’ve got you covered with some best practices for your social media during the hot summer months. “Summer posting had me a blast…”

Change of Season, Change of Habits

School is out, vacations are planned, and flex hours are now in place at some offices. As the seasons change, so do your habits, especially on social media. Most people are outside sunbathing (don’t forget the sunscreen) and swimming instead of Netflix and chilling with their phone. The birds might not be the only species to migrate when the seasons change. To find out what the best time to post on social media is, experiment. Consumers may be taking a vacation from Twitter and have road tripped to Instagram. Mixing up your frequency and testing different times of day early in the summer are the best ways to see what will produce the best results.

 

Bright colors

Break out the neon spandex colors. Your creative should embody summer. We’re talking bright colors, fun fonts, and vibrant images. During the summer, social media is filled with (#NoFilter) pictures from trips to the beach, baseball games, and other fun places. Avoid the FOMO and join in on the fun (it is summertime after all). Make sure your content and messaging not only fits in, but stands out. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try out some videos.

Summer swag

Remember that packing list up made that had everything you needed for vacation on it? You know the one with all the summer essentials? Consumers love to win and they also love beach bags, sunglasses, sunscreen, beach towels baseball caps, and much more. Summer-themed swag is a no brainer when it comes to prizing for contests and giveaway (FYI blog post of summer prizing ideas coming soon). You could take it one step farther and make it a summer-themed-kit (think sun safety swag, pool party pack, or beachy booze bag).

Get your employees in on it

Just because “nine to fivers” still have to work during the summer, doesn’t mean they can’t get in on the fun too. Host a company barbeque, organize a field day, set up an ice cream sundae bar or do all three at one time. Document all the fun (because if you don’t Snapchat it, it didn’t really happen) because it can be used as an employee recruitment tool in the future. No one wants to work for a business that doesn’t know how to have a little fun every now and then.

Outdoor sponsorships

After being cooped up all winter, hence why summer is prime concert and festival season (we’ve got your covered on that one). Take your brand to where the wild things people are with event or outdoor sponsorships. Think of it as the original social sharing, before the digital social sharing. Your brand will be engaging with a target audience and will gain a lot of exposure. However, if you want to stay in the social media realm, test out a Snapchat geofilter. All the cool kids are doing it.
